Minister Verner today announced the appointment of Hubert T. Lacroix as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).  Minister Verner has the lead on this issue. Please use the following lines when bridging out of interviews, or when speaking with local media: 
  • The CBC will be well-served by the leadership of Mr. Lacroix.
  • Last April, our Government also appointed Timothy W. Casgrain, as Chairman. These two highly qualified individuals will be able to take a fresh look at our national broadcaster and chart a solid path for its future.   
  • Our Government is committed to ensure that the CBC/Radio Canada continue to perform their vital role as national public broadcasters.
Questions and Answers

Q: What are your future plans for the CBC?

A: We are aware the CBC faces challenges. But its mandate also presents great opportunity. Stable yearly funding is provided to the CBC to carry out effective corporate planning.

If asked: we do not plan to increase its budget.

Q: Who is the candidate?

A: Hubert T. Lacroix practiced law for 30 years with three of Montreal’s most prominent firms. He acquired strong credentials in the radio broadcasting and publishing industries through his involvement with Telemedia and other companies. He is also well-known from his work as a television and radio sports analyst for CBC’s summer Olympic broadcasts.

Q: When will he assume his position?

A: Hubert T. Lacroix will assume the position of President of the CBC effective January 1, 2008 for a term of five years. Mr. Rabinovitch will continue to exercise his functions until the end of December 2007, in anticipation of Mr. Lacroix’s arrival.

Q: How was the candidate selected?

A: The search firm Egon Zehnder International, chosen by CBC/Radio-Canada, has led the selection process to fill this position. The position was advertised in La Presse and in the Globe and Mail on July 25, 2007.  The position was also advertised in the Canada Gazette and on the Web site for Government appointments. The Government’s goal is to appoint the person who is the most competent for the position, from the short list of potential candidates established by the selection panel. The CBC has engaged the services of Egon Zehnder in previous hiring processes.

Q: Why has the government appointed two businessman to lead the CBC?

A: A Crown corporation is a business and the Government wants experienced business leaders to lead its largest corporations.
