Jim Shaw, not on "A Team"

February 4, 2008

Upon learning that CRTC Chair Konrad von Finckenstein would not personally chair this week's hearings on the future of the Canadian Television Fund, Grant Robertson quotes Jim Shaw Jr. as saying "I'm not going to waste my time with their B-team".

I have appeared with Mr. Shaw at past CRTC hearings and before a House of Commons Committee. In common with some other hereditary CEOs, he is not a member of his company's A-team.

The money that Mr. Shaw threatened last year to withhold from the Canadian Television Fund does not belong to his company. It is money the CRTC has allowed the cable monopolies to collect from their customers provided they passed along 50% to the Television Fund.
