MOSCOW - Russia may be getting a new children's television channel with Kremlin backing after President Vladimir Putin pledged to address growing concerns over a lack of targeted programming for younger viewers.

Putin was speaking late last week at a Kremlin meeting with lawyers and population experts, where he addressed concerns that there is not enough suitable content on Russian television channels for children.

Putin said that work on creating a new designated channel on state television had been underway for the past year and the project was nearing completion.

"The question of opening a children's channel has been studied by state television for a long while. In the near future this work will be finished. A children's channel will appear on Russian television," Putin said in remarks reported by wire agency Interfax.

With the coming of digital television commercial TV operators should also consider providing "social packages," Putin added.
