Paul Godfrey has already been tasked once in his career with making the Financial Post a profitable entity. Now he's getting a second turn with the paper that emerged as its successor.
Canwest Global Communications Corp. on Monday named Godfrey president and chief executive of the National Post.
In 1991, when Godfrey was appointed chief executive of Sun Media Corp., part of his mandate was to make the Financial Post profitable. He achieved that before selling the paper to Conrad Black in 1998--who relaunched it as the National Post.
Godfrey said his main task will be putting the National Post on the road to making money: "I think it's doable, and I will do it."
Gordon Fisher will remain as publisher of the National Post and continue to focus on daily operations at the paper.
The role of chief executive is being newly created for Godfrey, who will concentrate on boosting advertising sales and searching for other revenue opportunities when he starts on Jan. 1.
