TORONTO – Canadians want better regional representation from the CBC, but are not convinced that the corporation needs more money to do this, according to an Ipsos-Reid poll to be released today.
The poll, commissioned by the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting, an independent advocacy group, revealed that almost 90 per cent of those surveyed want the CBC strengthened in their region.
But about half of them believe funding to the CBC should remain the same; 41 per cent believe funding should be increased, while 9 per cent say it should be cut.
"Ottawa should listen to Canadians. CBC is falling short when it comes to one of its principal mandates under the Broadcasting Act: To reflect Canada and its regions to national and regional audiences," Friends of Canadian Broadcasting spokesman Ian Morrison said in a statement.
The Ipsos-Reid survey, conducted Aug. 6 to 11, polled 1,100 Canadians and has a 3-per-cent plus/minus accuracy rate 95 per cent of the time.
